At Ludicious Game Conference 2019, countless innovative Indie Games were exhibited. Without further ado, here are my three favourite games of this year’s edition.

#1 Frost

The player controls the particle swarms of Frost’s puzzle levels by drawing paths. Image: http://frost-game.com/

One of my absolute highlights in terms of audio-visuality is the game Frost. It captivates with its beautiful and razor-sharp graphics, consisting of glowing and fluently moving particle swarms. The dreamy soundtrack as well as its calm and intuitive levels lead you into a relaxed state of flow. It’s a game perfectly suitable for shutting down after a hard day at work to get immersed into a breathtaking world of soothing sounds and wondrous, vivid swarms.

You can control the game by drawing particle paths. The goal is to navigate the particles of a certain color into a marked area to fill up a loading bar. It’s sometimes not so easy considering the different characteristics of the swarms and the structure of the levels. With a bit of creativity and experimentation you’ll be able to master each level though. The option to delete drawn paths supports the immersion of playing and has a motivating effect.

#2 Tick Tock: A Tale for Two

The dark, stylised backgrounds and the uncanny soundscape underline the gloomy mood of Tick Tock: A Tale for Two. Image: https://www.ticktockthegame.com/

Do you like Escape Rooms? If so, you will definitely like Tick Tock: A Tale for Two. You could call it an Escape Room with split screen mode.

As the title suggests, it’s a game for two players. Each player has its own device (smartphone, tablet or computer) to solve a variety of puzzles. What makes the game interesting is, that each player has a different view on his screen, making it necessary to communicate and give instructions to each other. The goal is to solve the puzzles, escape the tenebrous surroundings and find out the final truth about this place.

The dark, stylised backgrounds as well as the uncanny soundscape underline the gloomy mood and contribute to an immersive gaming experience.

Note that currently the game is very short. You can easily play it through in twenty to thirty minutes. If the game designers plan to extend the game’s length or even publish the game based on episodes is unknown.

#3 PikuNiku

The colorful villagers think you’re a monster and quickly decide to put you in a cage. One of the countless droll scenes of the 2D platformer PikuNiku. Image: http://pikuniku.net/

Finally, I’d like to introduce you to the game that made me laugh the most at Ludicious. PikuNiku is a 2D platformer including a single player and a multiplayer co-op mode. The world of PikuNiku is populated with quirky and cute characters with partly dubious ideologies and fears. At the beginning, for example, colorful villagers think you’re a monster and quickly decide to put you in a cage. And when mysterious cameras begin to appear behind buildings, you know that not everything in this cheerful world is as peaceful as it seems to be.

You play the game as a red blob on two legs, whose attack move is a kick. With the kick you can also do a lot of other funny things, like opening cabinet doors, hurling other characters through the air or swinging yourself through the landscape. The occasional mini-games, lively dialogues and the squeaky cheerful soundtrack is integrated nicely within the game experience.

While the single player mode mainly revolves around the story of the red blob, in the multiplayer co-op mode your objective is to solve puzzles together. This is challenging due to the chaotic movements of the blobs, but mostly quite amusing.
